With very few core changes to the battle system, there's no reason Legends: Arceus' combat couldn't be integrated into a Gym system and Pokémon League. Legends: Arceus' stealth could even be used to hide from opposing trainers as well. Even larger Pokémon could be effectively hidden from the player through creative level design and art direction. Some semblance of random encounters can be brought back by making Pokémon more effective hiders, and giving them environments where they blend in better. Mostly linear routes connecting many different towns can return. The ancient setting provides the possibilities for all these changes, but many of Legends: Arceus' advancements can be adopted in future, more traditional Pokémon games. Legends: Arceus has so swiftly modernized the Pokémon formula that previous games feel obsolete, and the series should never look back. The Pokédex in Legends: Arceus is finally a reason to catch every species, and it's less of a hassle than it has ever been. Even returning to Sword and Shield or Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the other two most recent games, would feel like a chore. The lack of text boxes in and around combat has greatly improved the core Pokémon gameplay experience in Legends: Arceus, and as a result, players are more consistently engaged with the game. Making battles a more organic part of gameplay has done wonders for how Pokémon flows. There's no more getting forced into a battle while walking through tall grass, and all the text boxes summarizing the experience points and levels earned have been removed. Players can even walk around while the battle is happening, and when it's over, their Pokémon returns and they're on their way. This means there is no transition screen Pokémon Legends: Arceus' battle system works within the context of the rest of the game, where a short animation is played and the battle begins right where the wild Pokémon was encountered. Battles are rarely a surprise, since wild Pokémon can be seen in the over world, and they no longer take place in a sort of pocket dimension. With opponents also using these styles, it can throw a wrench in the traditional strategy of Pokémon battles, but the more important changes are structural.Īll the inconvenience of encountering a wild Pokémon has been streamlined out of Legends: Arceus. The only other major change to the battles themselves is the addition of Agile and Strong Styles of moves, which let a Pokémon attack faster but at the expense of damage, or stronger but slower respectively. Every Pokémon in Legends: Arceus' Pokédex can still only know four moves at a time, but those that are forgotten are no longer lost forever, letting players swap out their team's abilities at will. Although battles against other trainers are fewer and farther between, Pokémon still square off in a turn-based competition, using a variety of moves until one is knocked out or a wild Pokémon is caught. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the battles themselves are practically the same as they've always been.
